Spending the Day at Del Mar #WritingBravely

Ocean spray, Palomar air, preferred parking.

Thoroughbred club, Kentucky turf, gates open.

Pearl-snap shirts, weathered jeans, shit kickers.

Collared shirts, linen shorts, boat shoes.

Printed tees, cowboy boots, straw hats

Silk sheaths, feathered bonnets, scuffed pumps

Chestnuts, at the post, down the stretch, five and a half furlongs.

Claims race, blinkers on, filly stakes.

Parimutel, exacta box, pick 3.

Jockeys, trainers, owners.

Buy the race, in the money, he wagers.

With patience, yet lonely, she waits.

I am a fish

Diving in the deep

I panic too late gasping

What about the sharks

____________

Wednesday, April 19, 2017. I recently felt like a flounder–stuck at the bottom and overwhelmed by the heavy seas. Today I realized my fins are not anchors. I am a fish. Tonight, I doodled the image using ArtRage, then I wrote the haiku while watching the reality TV show, “Survivor.” ©2017 Stephanie Abbott. All rights reserved.

Joan of Arc in Haiku

Pious, French, fighter
Tried for heresy, retried
Charred beauty to saint

____________

Monday, April 17, 2017. Today, I snapped this picture of a painted statue of Saint Joan of Arc that stands in front of the St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church in Las Vegas, Nevada. Lucky for me, today happens to be National Haiku Poetry Day. Tonight, I wrote this haiku in honor of the anniversary of her beautification (April 18, 1909 at Notre Dame de Paris by Pope Pius X).
